Langton's Ant

One ant, two rules: turn right on a white cell, turn left on a black cell, then flip it and move. For ~10,000 steps it looks completely random. Then, without warning, it locks into a perfect diagonal highway and never stops.

HOW IT WORKS

On a white square: turn right, flip to black, move forward. On a black square: turn left, flip to white, move forward. Two rules, no memory beyond the grid itself.

THE PHENOMENON

For ~10,000 steps the pattern looks like structured noise. Then the ant locks into a diagonal highway of 104 steps, repeating forever. No one has proved why. It just does.

WHAT TO TRY
0 – 500Nearly white space. Pattern looks almost ordered.
500 – 9,000Dense, chaotic, no obvious structure.
9,000 – 11,000The transition. Watch the highway emerge.
11,000+A perfect diagonal staircase, forever.
