Friyay, a Small Game Night App for Work
We have a Fun Friday thing at work. Once in a while, everyone drops what they are doing, gathers around one screen, and plays some silly games for an hour.
This time I wanted something a little nicer than a slide deck to put on the screen, so I made a small web app for it. It is called Friyay.
It is not a big project. It is a few pages with some questions in them. But it was fun to make, so I wanted to put it somewhere.

The rounds
There are four rounds right now, laid out as a little stack of cards you pick from.
- Trivia. Ten multiple choice questions. Things like what the first item ever sold on eBay was, or what colour a polar bear's skin is.
- Rebus. Ten picture puzzles where the words are arranged to hint at a phrase. You just flip through them and people shout answers.
- Logo Quiz. Show a logo, guess the brand.
- True or False. Fifteen statements, some true, some popular myths.

For trivia, nobody needs to use their phone. Whoever is hosting clicks an option for each person's guess, and the bars fill up so the room can see how split everyone is. Then you press reveal.

True or False, standing up
This round is played standing up. Everyone stands. Hands on your head means true, hands on your hips means false. If you guess wrong, you sit down. Last person standing wins.
It is a very simple idea, but it gets people moving and paying attention, which is more than most work meetings manage.

How it works
It is a plain Next.js app. The only part I like a little is how rounds are added. Each round is just a folder:
rounds/
1-trivia/questions.json
2-rebus/1.jpg, 2.jpg, ...
3-logo-quiz/1.png, 2.png, ...
4-true-or-false/statements.json
The app looks at what is inside each folder and decides what kind of round it is. A folder of images becomes a picture round. A questions.json becomes a quiz. A statements.json becomes True or False. The number at the front sets the order and the rest becomes the title.
So the next time I run this, I just add a new folder and the round shows up. No database, no admin page.
The look is a bit loud on purpose: a pixel font for headings, hand-written notes, chunky shadows, and tilted sticker labels. I wanted it to feel like a party on a projector, not a form.
That is it
That is all there is to it. A small thing I made to make a Friday a bit more fun. If you want to run something similar at your workplace, the code is on GitHub and you can swap in your own rounds.
Got a good trivia question or a True or False statement that fools everyone? Send it my way and it might end up in the next round.
